Today we’d like to introduce you to Germán Vidal, a sports photographer based in Valencia, a trainer and author specialising in action photography and editing with Capture One. A professional who has been immersed in the world of photography for over two decades and who is now also part of the Arcadina Ambassadors.
In a sporting competition, there are no second chances: a celebration, a fall, a victory or a moment of excitement happens in a fraction of a second, and the photographer must be ready to anticipate and capture them.
Meet Germán Vidal, sports photographer in Valencia
Germán Vidal’s journey into photography began almost by chance. As a child, his grandfather had a camera that sparked his curiosity. Those early encounters with photography weren’t intended to be professional, but they did mark the start of a relationship that, over the years, would become a true way of life.
At a time when there weren’t as many training opportunities as there are now, Germán taught himself. He experimented, made mistakes and devoted many hours to understanding how the camera worked and how he could use it to tell stories.
Over time, that initial curiosity evolved, eventually leading him to work at sporting events. What began as a hobby ended up becoming his profession and the main focus of his career as a sports photographer.
Sports photography as a form of storytelling
Although Germán Vidal has worked in various genres of photography throughout his career, sports photography accounts for the bulk of his professional work. For him, this discipline has something very special: the ability to capture once-in-a-lifetime moments. In sport, everything happens very quickly. A glance, a victory, a fall, a gesture of exertion or a celebration can last barely a fraction of a second. And that is when the photographer must be ready to anticipate the moment.
Germán sums up his work in one word: passion. After more than twenty years working as a sports photographer, he still feels the same excitement every time he steps onto a pitch, into a stadium or into a sports hall. For him, being behind a camera is a way of disconnecting from the rest of the world and focusing solely on telling stories through images.
Training in sports photography and Capture One
As well as his work as a photographer, Germán Vidal devotes a significant part of his professional life to teaching. He runs photography training sessions as well as specialist courses on editing and workflow using Capture One, a tool he uses regularly in his day-to-day work. This experience also led him to write a book on this software for the publisher Anaya, delving even deeper into one of the key programmes in his workflow.
But if there is one training programme that is particularly important to him, it is the in-person workshop he organises every year. It is not just a traditional course, but a multi-day retreat where students can experience first-hand the reality of a professional photographer’s work. During these sessions, there are photo shoots, image reviews, informal conversations and opportunities to ask questions that arise at any time of the day. For Germán, this close interaction is essential, because often you learn just as much during a practical session as you do in a discussion after a shoot.
Professional trust as the greatest recognition
Germán Vidal acknowledges that he has never been a photographer focused on competitions. Throughout his career, he has been more focused on professional work, on the projects that have arisen and on his relationships with clients, athletes, federations and sports organisations. Although he does not rule out taking part in a competition in the future, he is clear that his greatest professional satisfaction has not come from awards, but from the trust that others have placed in his work over all these years.
That trust is, in many cases, one of the most important forms of recognition for any professional sports photographer. Because behind every assignment, every event and every project lies a responsibility: to deliver images that meet the client’s needs and do justice to the moment captured.
