César Viera is now one of Arcadina’s ambassadors

Today we’d like to introduce you to César Viera, Arcadina’s new ambassador, a portrait photographer who has developed a highly recognisable visual language based on simplicity, emotion and a very personal understanding of light. His work is deeply rooted in low-key portraiture, a style where shadows, the gaze and expression take centre stage. In every image, César seeks to strip everything down to the essentials to create honest, timeless portraits brimming with humanity.

Self-taught, restless and with a great ability to connect with the people he photographs, César Viera has turned his passion for portraiture into a solid career, recognised both within and outside Spain. He also combines his work as a photographer with talks and workshops in which he shares his way of creating, viewing and feeling photography.

At Arcadina, we are delighted to have César Viera as our ambassador, a portrait photographer who embodies sensitivity, perseverance and the quest for a unique voice within professional photography.

Meet César Viera, Arcadina ambassador and low-key portrait photographer

In this interview, we wanted to find out a little more about César Viera’s story, his early days in photography, his approach to portraiture and the path that has led him to become one of the leading names in low-key portrait photography.

His career shows that you don’t always need to start with extensive resources to develop your own unique vision. Sometimes, the most important things are curiosity, perseverance and that creative drive that pushes you to keep learning every day.

Photography came into his life with a very special gift

When we asked César Viera how his relationship with photography began, his answer took us back to a very personal moment: his wedding day. It was then that his wife gave him his first camera, perhaps without realising that this gesture would mark the start of a new chapter in his life.

“My wife gave me my first camera on our wedding day. What began as a simple hobby very quickly turned into a real passion.”

In those early days, he didn’t have fancy equipment or much in the way of resources, but he was eager to learn. César recalls that time as a period of constant discovery , during which he tried to make the most of every resource at his disposal.

“At first I didn’t have much equipment, but I always tried to make the most of everything I had. I’ve been very restless and curious from the start, experimenting, researching and learning on my own.”

That self-taught path allowed him to experiment without too many pre-existing rules and to develop a very personal way of seeing. Over time, he discovered that what truly excited him was not the complexity of a scene, but quite the opposite: the ability of a simple portrait to convey truth.

César Viera and low-key portraiture: reducing an image to its essentials

César Viera specialises in portrait photography and his style is strongly characterised by low-key lighting. In his images, light is used sparingly, shadows play a fundamental role and the gaze of the subject becomes the focal point.

“My work revolves around simplicity, emotion and the connection with the person in front of the camera.”

For César, a good portrait depends not only on technique or visual perfection. His aim is to go beyond a correctly lit image to achieve a photograph that conveys something authentic.

“I always try to strip each image down to its essentials, removing everything superfluous to focus solely on the gaze, the expression and the humanity of each person.”

That quest for simplicity is precisely one of the keys that makes his work recognisable. His portraits need no grand artifice to make an impact. The power lies in the connection, in the atmosphere and in that direct way of portraying each person from an honest place.

Photography with emotion, truth and a cinematic eye

Although portraiture is at the heart of his work, César Viera also acknowledges a strong attraction to the more creative and cinematic side of photography. He is interested in creating characters, building atmospheres and drawing inspiration from visual worlds that allow him to go a step beyond the classic portrait.

“I love creating characters, drawing inspiration from cinema, characterisation or different visual worlds, and letting myself be carried away by that more artistic and narrative side.”

That blend of simplicity, emotion and creativity gives his photography a very distinct identity. On the one hand, we find direct, human portraits; on the other, more narrative images where light, the subject and composition help to tell a story.

In both cases, there is a common element: the search for an image that stands the test of time.

Not feeling ready to teach across Spain

As well as his work as a photographer, César Viera also delivers specialist training in portrait photography. However, he admits that at first he couldn’t imagine himself in that role.

“At first, I never wanted to teach. I didn’t feel capable of teaching anyone anything.”

Over time, other photographers began to take an interest in his way of working and to ask him how he created his images. That external curiosity was the impetus that led him to share his process in a more structured way. Today he gives talks and workshops on portrait photography in which he explains his working method from the initial idea to the final execution of each image. He has had the opportunity to do so throughout Spain and also in countries such as France and Germany.

Furthermore, one of his most special experiences was taking part in a talk in Los Angeles during Adobe MAX, a moment he recalls with particular fondness in his career as a trainer.

Sharing a way of looking at photography

For César Viera, training is not just about explaining lighting setups or technical processes. Although technique is important, his aim goes far beyond that.

“Rather than teaching technique, my aim is to share a way of looking at photography and understanding portraiture through emotion and simplicity.”

This idea resonates deeply with the essence of his own work. In his workshops, César doesn’t just demonstrate how to light, compose or edit a shot; he also explains how to conceptualise an image, how to connect with the subject, and how to make decisions that ensure the final result has emotional coherence.

This approach makes his workshops a particularly valuable experience for photographers who are not just looking to improve a specific technique, but to find a more personal voice in their photography.

National and international recognition in portrait photography

In recent years, César Viera has received various awards and accolades both in Spain and abroad. Among these, his recent silver medal in the natural portrait category at the WPC World Photographic Cup 2026 stands out in particular. This recognition marks a significant milestone in his career, not only for the individual achievement but also because he was part of the Spanish national photography team, with which Spain secured the title of world runner-up.

“I recently became world runner-up in the natural portrait category at the WPC World Photographic Cup, and I was also part of the Spanish national photography team, with whom we were crowned world runners-up.”

Furthermore, several of his works have been included in the FEPFI’s collection of honour, a recognition that reinforces his development as a photographer and his commitment to meticulous, honest portrait photography with a very clear identity.

The importance of staying true to one’s own vision

Beyond the awards, there is something particularly interesting about César Viera’s career: his ability to remain true to his own understanding of portraiture.

In an industry where trends often change rapidly, his work demonstrates the importance of building a style rooted in authenticity. Low-key lighting, simplicity, emotion and a connection with the subject are not one-off techniques in his photography, but the foundation of his entire visual language.

This path, forged with patience, curiosity and perseverance, is what has allowed him to grow as a photographer and connect with other professionals who find in his work a source of inspiration.

What is the key to making a full-time living from photography?

Making a living from photography is one of the great challenges facing many professionals. That is why we wanted to ask portrait photographer César Viera what he believes a photographer needs to be able to devote themselves fully to this profession.

His answer avoids set formulas. For him, there is no single key or one path that works for everyone.

“Honestly, I don’t know if there’s a single key to making a living from photography.”

What he is clear about is that, in his case, being able to devote himself to what he is most passionate about is a privilege. And also that the way one works ends up being reflected in the final result.

“I think a key part of it is doing things with care, with respect and with a love for what you do. When you work like that, it naturally comes through in the result.”

In a profession as demanding as photography, where you not only have to create images but also manage clients, communicate, sell, train and run a business, that attitude makes a huge difference.

Perseverance as the true path to progress

If there is one idea that César considers fundamental, it is perseverance. For him, there are no real shortcuts or magic formulas that can replace daily work.

“Perseverance is the only real path to progress. There are no shortcuts; you simply have to keep working, learning and improving every day.”

This view fits very well with the reality of many professional photographers. Behind a recognised image, a distinctive style or a solid, career, there are usually years of trial and error, learning and evolution.

That is why one of the pieces of advice César conveys most clearly is to never stop learning. Photography changes, tools evolve and so does the market, but the attitude of continuing to grow is what allows you to stay professionally relevant.

“Never stop learning.”
